I remember a conversation I had with a woman years ago about Israel’s King David. Join our host Gary Petty on Beyond Today! Well today, we’ll take a candid look at David’s lust, misuse of power to commit murder and his heart wrenching request of God to “Create in Me a Clean Heart.” Now this question is important to you and me when we face the times in our lives when we fail miserably as Christians and we wonder how can I return to God? How can we reconcile David’s horrible sins with him being honored throughout the Bible as a man of God? He is Israel’s King David who wrote much of the book of Psalms. A king whom God said was a man after His own heart ( Acts 13:22 Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up to them David to be their king to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, which shall fulfill all my will.Īmerican King James Version ×). This story is in the Bible and it involves one of the most famous kings of ancient Israel. Now I’m not talking about the latest steamy novel or blockbuster movie. Growing a relationship with God is worth the struggle of identifying the obstacle and then praying for guidance in the steps to take to promote a change of the heart. It is a story of intrigue, sex, and murder. We pray this verse from a place of hope, having confidence that obstacles can be overcome. We pray, as is in Psalm 51:10-Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. This year, our Lenten journey will lead us to examine the health of our spiritual hearts and ask: what specifically, is the most persistent obstacle in my relationship with God? The 40 days we have in Lent span from Ash Wednesday, March 2nd, to Easter Sunday, April 17th. Only God can break in, cleanse and renew hearts.

Even when we are disciplined, in the habit of praying, in the habit of Bible reading and meditation- even when we’re coming to church- our practices, at their most fruitful, are still, at the core, imperfect. Our reflection, examination, and assessment of our inner-most selves… our hearts… will continue through the 40 days of Lent.Ī growing relationship with God is often a struggle. The mood of the service is penitential and reflective as we ask God Almighty to create in us new and honest hearts. The season of Lent opens with Ash Wednesday.
